ESPN’s Collegiate Esports Championship is ready for action this May
Competitors will battle it out for a chance to win scholarships, and perhaps get scouted by pro esport teams.
University students are set to battle it out for scholarships in less than two weeks from now.
Taking place at the George R Brown Convention Center Comicpalooza in Houston, Texas from May 10 to 12, theCollegiate Esports Championshipis ESPN’s first-ever event that’s focused at getting college students involved in esports, and has hundreds of schools in the US participating.
These students will compete in games such asOverwatch, Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition, Hearthstone, Starcraft II, and Heroes of the Storm. The CEC will also become Overwatch’s only collegiate championship.
“As universities continue to grow their esports programs at the varsity, non-varsity and club levels, we’re proud to be providing a platform for national exposure and recognition of some of the most talented players in the collegiate space,” said John Lasker, vice president of Digital Media Programming for ESPN.
The qualifiers will be run by Tespa and Collegiate StarLeague’s (CSL), and some of the qualifying rounds, as well as the main event itself, will be streamed online on “various platforms”, likely Twitch and ESPN’s own channels.
