The first tournament will be the SSBU Online Open this June. Unfortunately, registration for the event will be region-locked to Canada, Mexico, and North America.

Nintendo has yet to announce whether the tournament will follow the official rule-set or the more balanced, competitive version used by the Smash community.

Registration for the Super#SmashBrosUltimateOnline Open June 2019 is open NOW! The winner of this tournament will win a trip and registration to#Evo2019!https://t.co/OGWrIkdi0tpic.twitter.com/HF6sJoQcXj

The Online Open champion will also win the opportunity to play on the SSBU stage at EVO 2019, with airfare and accommodation paid for by Nintendo.

This is a great first step for Nintendo to get more involved with the fighting game community. While SSB has been a staple at tournaments like EVO for years, Nintendo has never been as involved as Capcom is with Street Fighter or Bandai Namco is with Tekken.
