Riot explains how Valorant’s competitive mode and ranking system will work

The game’s highest rank will simply be called “Valorant”.

Riot Games has officially announced how they’re integrating Valorant’s ranking system and competitive mode in a blog post by Valorant Senior Producer, Ian “Brighteyz” Fielding.

Valorant will have eight ranks, with three tiers each, except for the top Valorant rank. The ranks will be divided into Iron, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Immortal, and the game’s highest rank — Valorant.

According to Valorant’s ranking system, a player’s personal performance will be the criteria for their ranking evaluation. But in terms of gaining rank, winning games is the most important factor. Players will be able to unlock competitive matchmaking once they’ve completed 20 unrated matches.

“For those at the Valorant rank level, winning and how decisive games are won or lost will be the only factor we measure, because at the highest levels of competitive play, we trust you and your teammates have earned your way there,” says Fielding.

Groups with five players will also be able to queue into competitive matchmaking, but they must be within 2 ranks or six tiers from each other to participate. According to Fielding, “this is to ensure that there isn’t a huge skill disparity in games where one player is clearly above or below the average skill of other players in the match.”

Some clarity: there is no patch 0.48, the next patch will be 0.49. Rated mode will go live as soon as we’re confident in the stability of that that patch on live. Current ETA for 0.49 is sometime next week. Will let you know more specifics as we get closer.
