Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is getting a limited-time Nintendo 64-themed tournament

SSBU is about to experience the ultimate throwback.

Nintendo has announced the Original Class of ’64 tournament for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, a three-day in-game event dedicated to the original Super Smash Bros. released on the Nintendo 64 in 1999.

Players taking part in the tournament will only be able to use fighters, stages, and items from the original game.

The original roster was significantly smaller, with just 12 characters — Mario, Donkey Kong, Link, Kirby, Fox, Yoshi, Pikachu, Samus, Luigi, Ness, Captain Falcon, and Jigglypuff — compared to SSBU’s current roster of 80 characters.

As for the stages, most of the original locations have stood the test of time, with only Planet Zebes and Sector Z not appearing in the latest installment. Some iconic items such as the green shell and the hammer have also been present since the first game while the fan, which was part of the original item list, is the only original item missing in SSBU.
