WESG cancels APAC Finals due to coronavirus epidemic
The coronavirus outbreak has stopped this year’s WESG event in its tracks.
World Electronic Sports Games (WESG) has announced that it has canceled its Asia-Pacific (APAC) Finals event due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak in the region.
WESG announced the cancellation on its officialTwitteraccount, stressing that the decision was made “in an attempt to limit international travel to control the spread of the coronavirus.”
The WESG 2019-2020 global event featured competitions in Dota 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO), Starcraft II, and Pro Evolution Soccer 2020.
The APAC Finals for CS:GO was already announced to have been cancelledin January due to the coronavirus outbreak.
The WESG APAC Finals was originally set for January 3-5 in Malaysia, but was laterpostponed to February 16-18 in Macau.
WESG has not yet made any announcement regarding a replacement tournament for the event, though they assured that they will be making further announcements as the situation develops.
While there has been no official announcement regarding the WESG Global Finals, set to be held in Chongqing, China this March, it is also expected to either be postponed or canceled as it is near the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan.
The ongoing epidemic has severely affected a growing number of esports leagues and tournaments set in the APAC region, such as the League of Legends leagues inChinaandSouth Korea, and Chinese leg of theOverwatch League, to name a few.
